Because typical dental office visits are longer than those of a primary care provider, dentists and dental hygienists are well-positioned to offer primary prevention messages to those who have not initiated smoking, while assisting current smokers to quit. JSI's Community Health Institute (CHI) was awarded the "Training Oral Health Providers to Motivate Patients to Quit Smoking" project from the New Hampshire Endowment for Health. CHI trained nearly 500 oral health professionals in 45 practices in the Ask, Advise, Refer model linking patients to the NH Smokers' Helpline for tobacco treatment.
