John Snow, Inc. (JSI) has been selected by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to strengthen Ethiopia’s health information system ecosystem through the Digital Health Activity, USAID’s flagship digital health program. The Activity will support the national “Information Revolution Roadmap,” a critical component of Ethiopia’s Health Sector Transformation Plan. The project will be officially launched by USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Sean Jones and Ethiopia’s Minister of Health Dr. Amir Aman in Addis Ababa on November 14, 2019.

Through the Digital Health Activity, JSI will apply 25 years of learning and experience in Ethiopia to work with the Federal Ministry of Health and other partners to create a sustainable, resilient, and interoperable health information system (HIS) that ensures the entire health sector has the data, analytics, and skills necessary to improve the health and well-being of all Ethiopians.

The five-year, $63 million Activity will support USAID’s and the Government of Ethiopia’s mutual goals of improving the quality of people’s lives through better health services and building a sustainable health care system through the use of data for decision making.

JSI will lead the Digital Health Activity with a consortium of partners including Dimagi, Simprints, IntraHealth International, Orbit Health, Regenstrief Institute, Websprix, and Zenysis Technologies. JSI and its partners have previously helped support Ethiopia’s Information Revolution through projects such as the Data Use Partnership, the USAID APC Health Management Information System Scale-Up Project, USAID AIDSFree, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded Last 10 Kilometers (L10K) project, among others; thus, the JSI consortium is uniquely positioned to continue building on these systems and design innovative, interoperable digital health solutions.

JSI supports digital health solutions through applied technology in more than 20 countries globally, from advanced data solutions to health information systems. The Digital Health Activity will leverage JSI’s experience to advance digital health policy, health data-driven solutions, and a locally owned, world class open source software for a sustainable, context-driven health information system in Ethiopia.
