SUMMARY

In 2015, Ethiopia launched its Health System Transformation Plan to build on its significant gains in improving health outcomes in the country. A cornerstone of the plan is the digitization of the methods and practices used to collect, analyze, present, and disseminate information. The USAID-funded Digital Health Activity (DHA) is a five-year project that supports the Government of Ethiopia to achieve the country’s Information Revolution Roadmap.

Together with the Federal Ministry of Health and partners through the Data Use Partnership and other mechanisms, DHA is helping build sustainable, resilient, and interoperable health information systems (HIS) that ensure the entire health sector has the data, analytics, and skills necessary to improve the health and well-being of all Ethiopians. DHA is doing this through three objectives:

  • Digitization: The co-creation and support of feasible solutions to digitize, integrate, and scale up priority HIS. These include community health information systems, regulatory information systems, health management information system, electronic medical records, and human resource information systems.
  • Data Use: The development of a culture of data use at all levels of the health system, so that data is used to make decisions about health planning, performance management, and delivery.
  • Governance: The adoption of best practices and policies in data use, data system architecture and IT infrastructure by government agencies and implementing organizations.

JSI leads the Digital Health Activity with a consortium of partners including Dimagi Inc., IntraHealth, Orbit Health, Simprints and Websprix.
