Clean Air, Healthy People: A Citizen-led Approach to Improving Urban Air Quality

Living in areas with polluted air is linked to worse respiratory health. It is critical to involve citizens and communities in every step of addressing this issue, including policy, monitoring, and action. The USAID-funded Building Healthy Cities (BHC) project partners with four Smart Cities across Asia (Indore, India; Makassar, Indonesia; Da Nang, Vietnam; and Kathmandu, Nepal) to refocus city policies, planning, and services with a multi-sectoral health equity lens to improve healthy urban planning. Our work focuses on many aspects of environmental health, including air quality. This brief, written by JSI in 2020, summarized BHC's citizen-led approaches to improving air quality in our partner cities.
