Makassar Health Needs Assessment

The USAID-funded Building Healthy Cities (BHC) project aims to increase the understanding of the best routes for improving the social determinants of health in urban contexts. In its first year, BHC conducted several exploratory data collection activities in two Smart Cities to inform the project's approach. The resulting data is intended to be used by city stakeholders to define barriers to implementation, unintended consequences, and key leverage points to improve urban health.

This report details the findings of one data collection initiative—the Makassar Health Needs Assessment—conducted in 2018 in the Smart City of Makassar, Indonesia. The purpose of this health needs assessment was to understand access, barriers, knowledge, and opportunities for healthy living in Makassar across a range of stakeholders, and to investigate multisectoral activities related to health and urban planning within Makassar’s Smart City initiative.
