Family Planning Access Program Will Continue Through 2023

Family planning saves lives and empowers women and girls to take control of their reproductive health. Since 2013, JSI has received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (the Foundation) to monitor various family planning (FP) pharmaceutical agreements negotiated by the Foundation with manufacturers. These agreements were enacted under the Family Planning 2020 initiative (FP2020) to reduce the public sector purchase price of three- and five-year contraceptive implants Jadelle® and Nexplanon®, respectively, and Sayana® Press, a subcutaneous three-month injectable of depot medroxyprogesterone (DMPA), and thereby increase global access to the products and expand contraceptive choice.
The Family Planning Access Program (FPAP) encompasses JSI’s work to support and monitor progress toward these agreements. Specifically, JSI monitors global shipment volumes and related supply information for the two contraceptive implants and DMPA-SC, and uses this information to update donors on progress under the agreements and help countries strengthen their FP product supply chains. To ensure a rational supply distribution of contraceptive products to FP2020 countries, JSI participates in the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) Coordinated Assistance for Reproductive Health Supplies (CARhs) group and the Coordinated Supply Planning (CSP) group, the latter of which JSI was instrumental in creating and currently leads. JSI’s leadership in both the CARhs and CSP groups informed the conceptualization of the Global FP Visibility and Analytics Network, which JSI is helping RHSC develop and pilot.
In addition, since 2013, JSI has provided quantification training and technical assistance under FPAP to strengthen national FP supply chain programs in Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Liberia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda; and has led several regional training workshops with country staff responsible for commodity security. JSI also modeled inventory requirements during implant program growth in 10 countries, the results of which analysis are to be published.
