Meeting the Immunization Needs of the Urban Poor

When these decisions are harmonized, they can improve access to health services; decrease lifestyle and environmental risk factors for poor nutrition and non-communicable diseases; reduce rates of transmission during infectious disease outbreaks, and increase availability of usable data for urban health decision-making. The USAID-funded Building Healthy Cities project aims to embed a health equity lens into city policies, planning, and services while improving data flow for existing Smart Cities in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Strengthening Programs in Haiti’s Urban Communities to End Vaccine-Preventable Deaths

JSI’s efforts to strengthen urban immunization programs in Haiti focused on the Cité Soleil—a very poor urban commune in the Port au Prince metropolitan area with a history of violence. JSI collaborated with the Directorate of the Expanded Program on Immunization, key stakeholders, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to investigate reasons for low immunization coverage in Cité Soleil and to develop practical, low-cost strategies to strengthen immunization services and improve coverage in urban areas. Strengthening Ethiopia’s Urban Health Program

The United States, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, marked the successful end of the five-year JSI-led Strengthening Ethiopia’s Urban Health Program, which helped improve the quality of health services for 2.5 million households in Addis Ababa and nearly 50 other cities and towns around the country.
