Identifying Signs of Sickness in Newborns

The India National Health Mission works toward reduction of under-five mortality and has been developing and implementing unique strategies to achieve that goal. The majority of deaths under five occur during infancy and particularly newborns so effective newborn care is a crucial challenge faced by every health care setting dealing in maternal and child health.

Training of ANMs and ASHA in low-resources settings is an urgent need. A key component is to equip staff with appropriate knowledge and skill to improve the quality of service delivery. ASHA is the key link for expanding services to the community and ensuring appropriate referrals for the sick.

This module helps AHSAs and other health workers improve their skills in identifying newborns who have signs of sickness and referring them to appropriate health facilities. JSI. 2016.
