WASHINGTON, D.C: JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) has been selected as a partner on the Moving Integrated, Quality Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Services and Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care to Scale (MOMENTUM) Integrated Health Resilience project. This 5-year cooperative agreement of up to $200 million is part of a suite of USAID’s awards designed to accelerate reductions in maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity; facilitate countries’ journeys to self-reliance; and ensure that investments in USAID countries (which span the humanitarian to development continuum) are tailored to country contexts and foster sustainability.

MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience will strengthen maternal, reproductive, newborn, and child health care, and voluntary family planning. It will award grants to host-government institutions and local nongovernmental organizations to build capacity to provide high-quality, integrated health care services in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

“JSI is eager to work on solutions to some of the most intractable health problems facing vulnerable women and children,” commented Carolyn Hart, JSI vice president. “We leverage activities and partnerships for health across the development and humanitarian nexus. We know that equitable access to health services is crucial for people, communities, and countries to realize their potential. We especially appreciate MOMENTUM’s focus on finding and scaling effective approaches to build more resilient health services in fragile settings.”

JSI will implement the project in conjunction with lead agency IMA World Health and partners CARE, GOAL USA FUND, and Pathfinder International. Additional members of the MOMENTUM consortium include the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Brigham Young University, and Premise Data.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of strengthening over-burdened and weak health systems and institutions. MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience will focus on mitigating the consequences of crises—whether the result of natural disasters, political instability, conflict, or violence—on the health and well-being of women, newborns, and children.
