On May 18th, 2019, Alex Gitungano, a previous global health intern at JSI, graduated from Boston University’s School of Public Health with his master’s in public health, with a focus on program management and global health.

During his time at JSI, Alex worked in the International Division on a number of different projects, including capacity building within the Ugandan government, USAID technical and financial proposal manuals, and mobile survey tools to increase the impact of PEPFAR programs in Zambia. Alex was also a recipient of the Lamstein Family/JSI scholarship which covered his tuition at BU.

Alex first arrived in the U.S. in 2014, leaving war-torn Burundi to bring a 9-year-old child, Leo, who needed life-saving medical treatment at Boston’s Shriners Hospitals for Children, after suffering extreme facial burns at age two.

Alec earned his undergraduate degree in clinical and social psychology at Burundi’s Hope Africa University but chose to study public health to further his passion for helping his community and the world.

“Alex has the determination and resourcefulness to do great things,” said Lamstein, President and CEO of JSI. “Everyone at JSI has been happy to help him on his journey, and we look forward to seeing the difference he’ll certainly make”.
