Building Healthy Cities (BHC) project
Produced By: Karin Bridger for JSI
VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Proper waste disposal is an important part of maintaining a healthy population and environment. Plastic waste can easily make its way into waterways, ending up in the ocean. Other types of waste can seep into the underground water table and contaminate drinking water. Waste dumps and landfills can also attract insects, rodents, and other agents that carry disease. These concerns are magnified in settlements on small islands, such as Barang Lompo, located 13 kilometers from the main island of Makassar, Indonesia. The Building Healthy Cities (BHC) project, with other partners, held workshops in Barrang Lompo with the goal of decreasing the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill, by finding alternate uses for that waste. Through the circular economy model, BHC promotes that effective waste management does not only bring positive impacts to the environment and health, but also brings intrinsic financial value. This video details the workshop and process.
