Women and HIV: Essential Reads!

For the March 10 observance of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD), here are recent developments in HIV prevention, care and treatment, research, and policy to inform your conversations around women’s health.
- Vaginal Ring Provides Partial Protection from HIV in Large Multinational Trial (February 22, 2016): This post shares the results of NIH-funded research on a long-acting form of HIV prevention that women can control.
- Empowering Women to End HIV & Intimate Partner Violence (November 17, 2015): This campaign and guest post by Greater Than AIDS introduces a compelling new video storytelling resource.
- Statement by National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice on New PEPFAR Targets (September 26, 2015): This post highlights PEPFAR’s investments to support an AIDS-free future for adolescent girls and young women, as part of the new PEPFAR targets for 2016 and 2017.
- Joint HUD-DOJ Demonstration Designed to Prevent Homelessness Among Victims of Domestic Violence (September 18, 2015): The U.S. Departments of Justice and Housing and Urban Development announced funding for housing assistance and supportive services to low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS who are victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, or stalking.
- Affordable Care Act Covers Preventive Health Services for Women (March 12, 2015): This AIDS.gov post notes that most insurance plans are now required to cover many preventive services for women without charging a co-pay or other fees. Among these services are screenings for HIV and sexually transmitted infections for sexually active women, and domestic and interpersonal violence screening and counseling for all women.
