Ulaanbaatar Resilient City Hackathon: Engaging Youth to Innovate in Ger Areas

The USAID-funded Asia Resilient Cities (ARC) Project organized the Resilient City Hackathon on June 3-7, 2024, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia with 25 youth between 18-29 years old. The objectives of the hackathon were to engage youth to develop innovative solutions to challenges that people who live in ger areas encounter and share their perspectives and ideas for improving resilience in the city. Hackathon teams worked on three themes: accessibility, environment, and green livelihoods. The event was organized by ARC implementing partner in Mongolia, The Asia Foundation, in collaboration with GerHub.

We used design thinking and systems thinking approaches as tools for hackathon participants to understand real-life challenges and design human-centered solutions. We also invited ger area residents to share first-hand experiences and insights into the issues and opportunities in ger areas. Mentors, guest speakers, experts, and judges with relevant and extensive experience also attended to enrich the hackathon’s sessions and quality. After five days of intense programming, the five teams pitched their project ideas to a panel of judges, and one team was chosen as the winner.

This report provides a summary of the hackathon program, and shares the participant proposals.
