This report details a mixed methods study done by the Timor-Leste Health Improvement Project (HIP). It outlines the three delays in seeking, reaching, and receiving care before, during, and after childbirth. The study was conducted to examine the contributing factors behind a devastatingly high maternal mortality ratio in Timor-Leste (557/100,000 live births).
This study is part of an ongoing effort to train skilled birth providers, encourage women to give birth in health facilities, and reduce the maternal mortality rate. The study determined contributing factors to the three delays, among which were educational status, ownership of goods, and traditional and cultural beliefs. This report provides an in-depth analysis of the study and its results, addresses challenges, and outlines next steps to reducing maternal mortality ratios in Timor-Leste. JSI, 2015.
