Post-Ebola Recovery: Strengthening Primary and Community Health Services

Between May 2014 and January 2016, Sierra Leone was impacted by the worst Ebola outbreak in recorded history. The outbreak exposed critical gaps within the country’s health system, revealing the need to strengthen health services to prevent future outbreaks. To begin the country’s recovery, Sierra Leone launched the Health Sector Recovery Plan, 2015-2020.

USAID, through the Advancing Partners & Communities Project, supported Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation in achieving key results of the President’s Recovery Priorities, with a focus on reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health services at peripheral health units. The project’s contributions generated significant improvements in infection prevention and control practices; infrastructure for water, sanitation, and hygiene and waste management; human resource capacity building; and community engagement.
