Laboratory Billing Decision Tool

As health reform continues to shift approaches to health care billing and reimbursement, organizations must develop flexible tools to meet those needs.

The overarching goal of the Regions VII/VIII SHRP-TTAC was to improve key stakeholder capacity in implementing billing and reimbursement systems to shift support for screening through reimbursement by Medicaid and other third-party payers. As part of this scope of work, JSI developed an online interactive tool designed to guide users through the unique challenges that public health laboratories encounter in the face of budget reductions or cuts. This tool was a continuation of work that JSI had initiated in the last year of the Region VIII IPP and the future of IPP assessment.

The Laboratory Billing Decision Tool provides an introduction to and guidance for billing, coding, and reimbursement for public health laboratories that are either not currently billing third-party payers at all or not billing them proficiently. At each decision point, depending on how they answer the question, users are directed to resources targeted to each specific billing challenge on the continuum, from pre-contemplation and contemplation, to action; from not billing at all, and not knowing how to do so, all the way through billing proficiently.
