SUMMARY

UNFPA plays an essential leadership role in contraceptive security. Working at the global and country levels, UNFPA supports the delivery of contraceptives and lifesaving maternal health supplies to ensure availability and choice of quality family planning and reproductive health commodities available when and wherever they are needed.

But these goals are hindered by suboptimal supply chains. Good supply chain management and last mile availability of products is predicated upon systems that enable data visibility, effective product flows, and trained, motivated actors all along the supply chain, from procurement to the service delivery point. Currently the supply chains for family planning and reproductive (FP/RH) in many countries are experiencing bottlenecks in all three areas.

UNFPA partnered with JSI to undertake a rapid analysis of common supply chain to understand what the most-critical needs are and how UNFPA can help ensure continuous product availability and choice for health (FP/RH) clients at the last mile. This analysis is still in progress but key findings and preliminary recommendations are highlighted here.

In Phase II of this collaborative project, UNFPA and JSI are implementing the recommendations made in Phase I to improve UNFPA's ability to ensure the availability of family planning products.
