SUMMARY

To reduce the number of women who smoke while pregnant, the March of Dimes and the Anthem Foundation has engaged JSI to develop and create a 30-minute training video for healthcare providers serving pregnant women or new parents who use tobacco.

JSI will work closely with the Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program (TPCP) and other NH subject matter experts to enrich the training opportunity with relevant and practical strategies providers can use to help their pre-pregnancy, pregnant, and postpartum patients to quit smoking.

A key feature of this learning opportunity will be the emphasis on instructing providers to actively refer patients to the telephone Helpline service operated by the New Hampshire Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).

1-800-QUIT-NOW offers free coaching and access to free nicotine replacement therapy to all NH residents’ not just pregnant women. The service also provides pregnant women more intensive coaching and support than what is offered to the general population.

The lesson will be available to healthcare providers by December 31, 2017 and will first be promoted to providers serving patients in the state’s Community Health Centers.
