SUMMARY

The New York State Department of Health (DOH) announced $6.7 million in grants to 25 organizations statewide to address obesity. Through this new Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Initiative, school and community-based organizations work together to increase demand for and access to healthy, affordable foods and opportunities for daily physical activity in New York schools and surrounding communities.

JSI was chosen to lead the Obesity Prevention Center for Excellence (OPCE) to provide technical assistance, training, resources, and a platform for grantees and their partners to collaborate. JSI is leading an exceptional partnership of collaborators consisting of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, PedNet Coalition, Sasaki Associates Inc., and the University of Rochester Medical Center Department of Pediatrics. Together, this JSI partnership offers substantial knowledge in obesity prevention, specifically creating healthy school and community environments through nutrition and physical activity-related policy in New York State and across the U.S. JSI and its partners are committed to promoting good health throughout New York and continue to provide culturally targeted services designed to help grantees build capacity.

Watch this recent video and learn about the successes the OPCE grantees are having creating complete streets for healthier New Yorkers.
