SUMMARY

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) chose JSI to develop and provide educational materials, targeted media promotions, trainings, and technical assistance to increase awareness and promote utilization of the Colorado Medicaid tobacco cessation counseling benefit and pharmacotherapy benefit available to Medicaid clients.

Over the course of the three-year project, JSI developed an integrative approach to create a system of training, social media, and community outreach to achieve the project goal to decrease the cessation success gap affecting low-socioeconomic status youth and adult smokers by 50 percent.

An overarching goal was to ensure that a majority of people and health care systems in Colorado recognize and treat tobacco dependence as a chronic condition. Throughout the course of the project, JSI developed and/or updated educational materials, developed training materials and facilitated presentations for providers serving Medicaid clients across Colorado. JSI subcontracted to Evolution Communications Agency to develop and implement a statewide media campaign to promote these benefits on a broader scale.
