Pneumonia is among the leading causes of death among children under five around the world and causes around 14% of childhood deaths in India. The Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) is an effective tool to protect children from Pneumococcal pneumonia and other pneumococcal diseases. In 2017, India introduced PCV in the routine immunization program and the country-wide expansion was completed in 2021. On October 29, 2021, the Government of India celebrated the nationwide expansion of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) as part of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” initiative.

JSI India is the lead technical partner supporting the national and state governments in the implementation of PCV in the UIP. The JSI India team is working with other immunization partners to facilitate training of medical officers, program managers, health workers, and cold chain handlers about the PCV introduction. JSI India has developed a training package that includes animated videos for sharing key messages. These videos are being disseminated in conjunction with virtual cascading orientations for supervisors and frontline health workers.
