New Initiative to Strengthen Egypt’s Family Planning Program

John Snow, Inc., has been awarded a new five-year USAID-funded program to improve family planning in Egypt. The Strengthening Egypt’s Family Planning Program (SEFPP) Activity will support the Government of Egypt in its expressed desire to strengthen its family planning and reproductive health sector by making it more effective and ultimately more sustainable.
The Egyptian Government is acutely aware of the economic and social impact resulting from a rapidly increasing population. Through SEFPP, JSI will support the Ministry of Health and Population Family Planning Sector (MOHP FP Sector) and the National Population Council (NPC) to re-establish Egypt’s strong family planning system and integrate family planning into the GOE’s maternal health and other health programs. The program will support the MOHP FP Sector and NPC to increase evidence-based planning, decision-making, and policy formulation, as well as quality improvement and contraceptive security, within Egypt’s family planning program.
“JSI has a deep history of supporting the Egyptian government’s public health goals,” commented Chief of Party Dr. Reginald Gipson. “This program builds on that work and will integrate family planning into existing maternal health services so that woman can receive comprehensive care to meet their reproductive health needs.”
According to the last census, Egypt’s population has risen from 72 million in 2006 to 84 million in 2013, and is estimated to be 92 million (a 28% increase) as of the end of 2017. This growth is primarily influenced by changes in birth rate, from an average of 3.0 births per woman in 2008 to 3.5 in 2013. If this trend continues, Egypt’s population is expected to reach 119 million by 2030.
To help Egypt achieve its family planning goals, JSI will lead a team that includes the Population Council, Center for Development Services, and Busara Center for Behavioral Economics, which bring a wealth of family planning and programing experience. Strengthening Egypt’s Family Planning Program is a five-year activity made possible by the support of the American People through the United States Agency for International Development.
