JSI Board Member Published in Newsweek

JSI board member Paul Osterman has an opinion piece published on Newsweek.com. In the piece, If Hospitals and Supermarkets are the New Front Line, We Need a New GI Bill, Osterman posits that with tens of millions of Americans putting their lives on the line and losing their jobs, the U.S. should consider a new type of GI bill.

Low-income workers are the face of inequality, and they often struggle to get the training they need to get higher-paying jobs. A “GI Bill for Today’s Heroes” would help frontline workers and people who are unemployed advance professionally by providing a living stipend and a minimum two years’ tuition for post-secondary education and training.

As Osterman writes, “Year after year, advocates bemoan the circumstances of low wage workers, policy wonks point to charts, and progressives advocate for change. But very little has happened. One good thing that can come out of this terrible crisis is a widely shared understanding of the debt we owe to low wage workers and a commitment to help them climb the economic ladder. A GI Bill for Today’s Heroes would be a big step in this direction.”
