In order for community-based organizations to leverage federal resources they must be located in designated underserved areas. Obtaining federal designations allows communities to apply for federal and state resources to assist with clinician recruitment and retention.

JSI worked with the Primary Care Office (PCO) at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) to assess and analyze geographic areas and populations to determine if they met the Health Resources Services Administration’s (HRSA) Office of Shortage Designation (OSD) requirements. Using GIS mapping and secondary and primary data analysis, JSI submitted mental health, dental, and primary care Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) and Medically Underserved Population applications for communities throughout Massachusetts. JSI was successful in garnering numerous designations and re-designations for the state.
