The HRSA Office of Health Information Technology (OHIT) is charged with supporting grantees' efforts to effectively use health information technology (HIT) to help improve patient outcomes and efficiencies. OHIT serves as the HRSA Administrator's principal advisor for promoting the adoption and implementation of HIT for the medically uninsured, underserved and other vulnerable populations. Therefore, the need was identified for a strategic plan that, in conjunction with HRSA's strategic plan, would help set forth the office's strategies for carrying out its mission over the next 5 years.

In September, 2006 JSI was contracted by the DHHS Program Support Center to develop a strategic plan and technical assistance center for the OHIT. The strategic plan will help clearly define the role of OHIT and its relationships with offices within HRSA, its grantees, and other constituents, as it addresses its mission to promote the adoption and effective use of HIT in the safety net community.
