JSI Presents at Chronic Disease Director’s Academy
October 5, 2017
In September, the JSI Healthy Communities team and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) facilitated a six-hour training at the National Association for Chronic Disease Directors’ 2017 Chronic Disease Academy. Over 15 Department of Health and Public Health Chronic Disease Directors and staff representing states across the U.S. were in attendance.
JSI and NYSDOH shared lessons on program design, implementation, and sustainability from Creating Healthy Schools and Communities (CHSC), a multi-sector initiative designed to increase demand for and access to healthy, affordable foods and opportunities for daily physical activity throughout New York.
The day was filled with thought-provoking activities, rich discussions, and several JSI-led physical activity breaks. The JSI team—Tammy Calise, Katie DeAngelis, and Laura Ruggiero—took the opportunity to highlight how NYSDOH and JSI mobilized state-level partners to embrace a “health in all policies approach.”
JSI provides training and technical assistance through the NYOPCE to 100 CHSC grantees across NY state. JSI offers knowledge and expertise in obesity prevention, healthy communities, and policy, systems and environment, providing culturally targeted services to help grantees create healthy school and community environments that address social determinants of health. JSI also works with the internal evaluators to use data to enhance grantee capacity.
The JSI Healthy Communities team was honored to be part of an opportunity to build knowledge and skills among Chronic Disease Directors and their staff that will support the highest level of effective public health practice.
