Lawrence Healthy Child Care Network, was one of a number of environmental justice projects that JSI developed to address environmental health issues in Lawrence, MA . It was a collaboration between JSI and the Centro de Apoyo Familiar (CAF), a Lawrence non-profit organization that provides services to Lawrence’s underserved population. JSI and CAF engaged child care providers to identify and address exposures in child care settings that affect the health of children. Ten Promotoras (health promoters) were engaged and trained by JSI and CAF. The Promotoras in turn engaged and trained more than 300 child care providers to take actions to improve conditions in their child care settings, share what they learned with other providers, and also the families of the children in their care. The majority of Lawrence families using child care services represent those most exposed to unhealthy environmental conditions that affect a low income population living in an old poor urban city.
