Vermont Information Technology Leader's (VITL) Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration (HISPC) team contracted with JSI to collect and assess the privacy and security issues in Vermont business practices related to the exchange of health information and to document the variations. As a result, the HISPC and health information technology (health IT) planning teams have convened meetings to assure that the findings and recommendations related to privacy and security are well coordinated and informed by stakeholders across their respective projects. This was part of a larger effort initiated by executive order of the President intended to use health IT to reduce medical errors, lower costs, and provide better information for consumers and physicians with the widespread adoption of inter-operable electronic health records (EHRs) and for health information to follow patients throughout their care in a seamless and secure manner.
