The Health Services Project (HSP) of Las Animas County, a community-based collaborative effort focused on improving local healthcare in Las Animas County, contracted with JSI to carry out a comprehensive countywide health needs assessment. The assessment involved three research methodologies: a secondary data analysis; a telephone survey of 325 residents of the county; and qualitative research including community meetings, focus groups and key informant interviews.

The findings from the research were synthesized to describe the health status of residents of Las Animas County, the county's community health resources and needs and the necessary health service infrastructure to support these needs. A current and projected socio-demographic profile of the county and identification of target populations that may be at increased risk of poor health outcomes were also included. In addition, findings described the strengths and weaknesses of current health services and identified needed improvements in terms of service availability and quality of health care services in Las Animas County. These data were used by the county to help prepare a service plan for a countywide Health Services Special District.
