Recent changes in state and federal funding for public health services, combined with the passage of the Affordable Care Act, have resulted in public health and health care systems undergoing tremendous change. State sexually transmitted disease (STD) programs, family planning agencies, and public health labs need assistance to keep up with the changes, while maintaining or improving the quality of services provided.

Through a collaboration between the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) at Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Office of Population Affairs (OPA), regional training centers were funded to provide training and technical assistance (T&TA) to improve billing and reimbursement systems; enhance prevalence monitoring; and improve quality among clinical practices for screening and treating Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphilis.

Building on JSI’s long history of providing T&TA for STD prevention through the Infertility Prevention Project, JSI was chosen as the provider of the Region I STD-related Reproductive Health Training and Technical Assistance Center (STD TAC). JSI will play an important role in building capacity among STD and family planning programs to improve sustainability of their programs. Specifically, JSI will provide T&TA in billing and reimbursement, and operations best practices using a range of modalities, including individualized technical assistance, training, tools, and resources.

The Region I STD TAC has also received additional funds from DSTDP to develop a STD Services Billing Toolkit. This toolkit is expected to be available at stdtac.org by September 2014.
