The Colorado Trust (The Trust), a Colorado health care foundation, focuses their grant making efforts on those individuals and families who have been historically ignored and underserved by the health care system and those who are most vulnerable. The Trust has a long history of seeking guidance from the Colorado community to inform its grant making. In order to do so, The Trust conducts an environmental scan every ten years to better understand the demographic and health trends in Colorado as well as the health issues that resonate with individuals throughout the state.

Because of the synergies in focus and JSI's expertise in conducting environmental scans, The Trust contracted with JSI to complete its 2012 state-wide environmental scan to help determine their future funding priorities. JSI used three research methodologies to complete this scan: community forums, organizational-based focus groups, and a consumer survey. The methodologies gathered input from Colorado stakeholders ranging from consumers to health care service providers, and policy leaders to community-based organizations. Fifteen community forums were conducted with health care community-based organizations across Colorado, ten organizational-based focus groups facilitated and a survey of 550 Colorado consumers implemented. JSI compiled a report for The Trust recommending initiatives for future grant making priorities.
