Hospital community benefit initiatives seek to improve community health status and overall quality of life in response to identified community health needs. JSI worked with the Bergen County Health Department and five hospitals in the county, including The Valley Hospital, to conduct a community health assessment and develop a strategic plan. These activities facilitated the development of a three-year community health improvement plan that will guide how the hospital engages with the community and other collaborating organizations in respect to its community benefit initiatives and enable the hospital to meet the community benefit requirements established by the 2010 Affordable Care Act and the IRS.

As part of this project, JSI assisted The Valley Hospital in completing the following tasks:

  • Training: JSI developed a tailored training curriculum and conducted a one-day on-site training for the Valley Community Health Department and newly formed Community Benefit Committee.
  • Promising practices: JSI conducted research on community benefit models and promising practices and drafted a summary of the findings.
  • Community benefit report: Identified existing community benefit initiatives and programs, reviewed existing marketing and materials, conducted phone interviews with community members to collect testimonials, and developed the final report. This report highlighted the community benefits activities, raised awareness of the program, and established the hospital as an institution that is responsive to community needs.
  • Strategic communications plan: Reviewed existing marketing products and communications activities, established goals, objectives and target audience, identified a variety of communication formats and channels, and presented a final plan and recommendations. The plan promoted Valley’s community benefits program throughout the community and continued to build goodwill with the public. This communications plan also helped The Valley Hospital to select messaging and channels for future community benefit communications activities.
All activities were conducted with the collaboration, input, and approval of The Valley Hospital Community Health Department and other key stakeholders.
