Under the National Network of Public Health Institutes' Community of Practice for Public Health Improvement, the Quality Improvement (QI) Award Program supported health departments to become more proficient in the adoption and application of QI and to meet the accreditation standards and measures set by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The JSI/Community Health Institute provided QI Coaching to support four local public health department recipients of the QI Award Program.

The Appalachian District Health Department in Boone, North Carolina collaborates with a range of stakeholders to implement complete street policies that consider multiple modes of transportation in the communities it services. Todd County Health Department in Elkton, Kentucky, which ranked 86/120 counties for physical environment in the 2011 County Health Rankings Report, will partner with the Todd County Health Coalition and the City of Elkton to improve access to healthy foods. The Riverstone Health Department in Montana and the Maricopa County Department of Public Health in Arizona worked on different aspects of increasing Women, Infants and Children Programs enrollment.

The JSI/Community Health Institute provided individualized technical assistance to each of these health department QI project teams through the use of distance technology as well as at a National Open Forum meetings in June 2012. The projects are included in the Public Health QI Practice Exchange, a searchable online database that organizes information about processes, tools, outcomes, and lessons learned from public health QI projects.
