JSI is committed to reducing malaria morbidity and mortality, especially in Africa, a continent where one child dies from the disease every 30 seconds. Using a wide range of public health experience to help overcome the many obstacles that prevent people from receiving help in the fight against malaria, JSI is involved in a multitude of activities that support and strengthen malaria programs in Africa.
JSI’s efforts in malaria include:
JSI works in conjunction with the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), a US-led international effort whose ambitious goal is to reduce malaria-related deaths in various African countries by 50% within the next five years. JSI provides leadership, training, knowledge sharing, and technical skills and services that are essential to PMI’s mission, offering its support and expertise on monitoring and evaluation strategies and building management and logistics systems for the distribution of malaria commodities. JSI is implementing malaria programs in over ten countries, including Tanzania, Uganda, and Mozambique, as part of PMI’s malaria programs.
JSI is also a member of the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership, an international effort whose goal is to reduce the burden of malaria by half by 2010. JSI provides leadership and technical expertise to RBM to help reduce the threat of malaria in many developing and transitional countries.
In many countries, JSI manages multiple USAID-funded bilateral health projects that support the public and private sector delivery of integrated health services, and works to integrate malaria and other health initiatives, including HIV, TB, and maternal and child health. JSI’s USAID-funded malaria activities have also involved collaboration with national malaria control programs to improve surveillance and vector management for prevention and control of malaria and other vector-borne diseases.
JSI has also worked in the area of malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) coordination—providing the critical first steps in combining treatment regimens for diseases, which require common resources and delivery strategies for control or elimination. Treatment of these NTDs provides better overall outcomes for malaria treatment and control.
Through the DELIVER and MEASURE Evaluation projects, JSI provides health system support for USAID’s malaria initiatives, from strengthening supply chain management and logistics systems for malaria commodities, to improving the collection and utilization of data for monitoring and evaluating malaria programs.
