WhatsApp Group Supports Capacity Development in Kenya

November 20, 2017

JSI received a Next Generation Immunization Training Grant from Bull City Learning (BCL) to launch a “Peer Mentorship and WhatsApp” initiative in Kenya. The program is designed to strengthen immunization capacity at public health facilities by leveraging the demonstrated competence of frontline health workers to mentor their peers in critical immunization skills and processes. The Nurses’ supervisors will work closely with the selected mentors to support them in their new roles. The face-to-face peer mentorship program will be supported by WhatsApp groups to strengthen networking and communication.

“The global community has set aggressive goals for increasing immunization coverage that will require more effective learning strategies," said Nathan Pienkowksi, PhD, BCL co-founder and head of instructional design. "Each winning initiatives embodies the innovation that is necessary to break through the training barriers that continue to impede immunization system performance and equitable access to vaccines for all children.”

The Next Generation Immunization Training Grants, sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, fund innovative training and capacity building solutions that will strengthen national immunization programs in meaningful and measurable ways. Nearly $900,000 has been awarded in 18 months to support the development and implementation of creative strategies deployed by grant recipients to motivate and educate immunization professionals, including health workers, EPI managers, and logistics specialists.

Capacity development is at the core of JSI's work and is centered on the core competencies of management, and tailored to immunization program needs. JSI works hand-in-hand with Ministries of Health and partners to improve equitable coverage, quality, and sustainability of routine immunization services by empowering health workers and program managers at all levels to transform data into meaningful action.
