Remembering Bob Hitt

July 18, 2017

It is with great sadness that JSI recognizes our friend and colleague Robert Hitt, 61, who died on Saturday, July 8, 2017.

Bob was a senior consultant in JSI’s Rhode Island Office, specifically working on the RI Ryan White Project. He was a friend to the JSI community for many years before he came to work with us.

Bob dedicated his life to HIV prevention and awareness initiatives. Prior to joining JSI, Bob worked at the Stanley Street Treatment and Resources (SSTAR), Inc. in Fall River, MA, (recently RENAMED SSTAR Family Health Center). Bob was also the Director of Project Aware for over 20 years and a co-founder of Rhode Island Project/AIDS, Inc. He had numerous professional affiliations and received many awards over the years for his efforts in public health and education.

Bob will be missed for his many unique skills, including personal warmth and the ability to connect with anyone and everyone, his capacity to conduct a host of trainings, some of which he developed himself, and his ability to see the big picture and work toward realizing a vision.

Bob is survived by his beloved husband, Bruce E. Barton, his mother, Shirley M. (Popple), his sister, Dorothy L. Hitt, by many nieces and nephews, and his cherished dog, “Smudge.” He is greatly missed.
