The Partnership Information Management System (PIMS) project, funded by USAID/Southern Africa and implemented by JSI, focuses on providing and maintaining decision support systems for the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program including geographic information systems (GIS). The Partnership Information Management System is an online data management system and is one of the most important reporting and tracking systems for all PEPFAR programs and initiatives that are aimed at reducing the burden of HIV and AIDS. PIMS currently hosts data for more than 235 PEPFAR implementing partners. PEPFAR in turn uses PIMS to consolidate all the data and indicators reported on to assess the impact, progress, and reach of their programs.

Through the project, JSI provides technical assistance, financial resources, tools, and technology to U.S. government, South African government, and other partners to ensure that support for the PIMS continues and that the system is maintained while new development takes place in response to changing and additional user requirements.

Through this project, PEPFAR’s needs and objectives for an electronic strategic information platform that supports the collaboration between the U.S. and South African governments to monitor and evaluate HIV and AIDS programming will be met. The project also builds South African government capacity in HIV and AIDS surveillance, health management information systems (HMIS), operations research, and monitoring and evaluation.

At the completion of this project, the ability of the U.S. government to report on results through a single, coordinated management system (PIMS) that allows for both analysis and mapping of PEPFAR and national program data down to the district level will have increased. Creating customized reports and multivariate maps for use by PEPFAR and South African government program managers and implementing partners will be possible – as will the alignment of PEPFAR program indicators with those of the SAG and other donors.

The PIMS project is a follow-on to the Enhancing Strategic Information Project
