Description

JSI is a public health research and consulting firm dedicated to promoting and improving health around the world. We are looking for a Creative Director with strong design, social media, and organization skills to join JSI and the HIV.gov Communications Team. Are you good with technology and creative concepts? Do you love finding clever ways to get things done and enjoy solving tough problems that lack obvious answers? Want to use all these skills to make a difference? Our ideal Creative Director should have a public health background with leadership experience in government communications work as well as the ability to combine technical skills (for example: concept development, graphic design, and video production) and editorial skills in a variety of tasks related to visual and digital design. The Creative Director will oversee all communication activities for HIV.gov and provide senior level strategic communications and design support to a variety of JSI’s public health projects, including HIV.gov.

RESPONSIBILITIES

General
  • Coordinate with project staff on communications strategy and design work to meet project expectations and deadlines
  • Investigate and forecast new media/communications applications and opportunities
  • Participate in the internal Health Communication team to coordinate design assignments across projects, share strategies and lessons learned, and participate in new business development
  • Work in close collaboration with project teams to design and develop culturally-appropriate, compelling print and online materials for (primarily) domestic public health projects
  • Support the production of consumer materials including but not limited to print materials (job aids, educational materials, posters, infographics, etc.) and visual design/graphic user interface for online products (websites, mobile apps, social media, eLearning modules)
  • Assist with design of presentation materials including PowerPoint presentations
  • Ensure adherence to U.S. government, client, and corporate protocols, including 508 compliance and data security

HIV.gov
  • Serve as Communications Director
  • Develop and implement communications strategies, standards, and work plans for HIV.gov that integrate traditional and social media
  • Collaborate with Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy (OHAIDP) Communications Director, Senior Digital Strategist, and other key staff
  • Provide technical supervision to project staff
  • Oversee HIV.gov blog development, scheduling, prep and posting
  • Oversee HIV.gov’s email marketing strategy and implementation
  • Serve as technical and mobile liaison for HIV.gov website
  • Manage and evaluate technical production of creative and new media activities (for example: digital storytelling, Facebook Live, animated videos, photo shoots) so that they are relevant, engaging and accessible
  • Provide technical assistance and training to various audiences on new media technologies through HIV.gov Virtual Office Hours, webinars, one-on-one consultation, and other forums
  • Network with community stakeholders representing Secretary's Minority AIDS Initiative Fund (SMAIF) priority populations
  • Review and present web and social media metrics with an eye to informing our overall digital strategy
  • Develop and present routine PowerPoint presentations and write brief analysis summaries
  • Write 6 month Communications Report and re-design report template as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
  • Advanced degree or certificate in communications, media, journalism, public health, or related field
  • Minimum 7 years graphic design work
  • Minimum 3 years experience working in government or on government public health/communications projects
  • Minimum 3 years experience developing health information and behavior change messaging for minority populations
  • Expertise in social media channels (Facebook, Facebook Live, Twitter, Instagram, You Tube)
  • Advanced skill with all elements of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite, including designing for PowerPoint presentations
  • In-depth knowledge of pre-press preparation and printing processes
  • Solid understanding of website development processes including user experience design, information architecture, and usability testing
  • Successful track record of creative design and project production (video, audio, animation, graphic)
  • Excellent problem solving and self-management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Availability to work during non-traditional business hours as needed

Preferred
  • Experience supervising creative/social media/digital staff
  • Strong relationships and networking history with minority health organizations
  • Knowledge of HIV, Hepatitis a plus
  • Work from DC or Boston Health Services Division Office
