John Snow, Inc. (JSI) is a public health research and consulting firm dedicated to promoting and improving health around the world. The JSI Health Services Division (HSD) seeks an experienced full time Graphic Designer to provide visual design services. The Graphic Designer should have the ability to combine graphic design and editorial skills for a variety of public health projects. In particular, the Graphic Designer will work with, a project for the Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease (OHAIDP) for the federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Visual design content areas include but are not limited to: HIV, viral hepatitis, blood and tissue safety, tick-borne diseases, other infectious diseases, specialty areas and general public health. Position can operate out of any of JSI’s domestic offices in: Boston, DC, RI, NY, NH, VT, ATL, SF, CO.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work in close collaboration with project teams to design and develop culturally-appropriate, compelling print and online materials.
  • Coordinate with project staff on all design work to meet project expectations, deadlines.
  • Assist with design of presentation materials including PowerPoint presentations and program reports.
  • Contribute to social media and website image/visual design strategy development for project promotion, marketing, education and consumer behavior change.
  • Create social media images/visual assets and libraries for Facebook, Facebook Live, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and other applications as they are utilized.
  • Ensure that designs and imagery are complementary to approved content themes.
  • Use professional design software, primarily Adobe Creative Suite, to create print and web-based materials.
  • Support the production of consumer materials including but not limited to print materials (job aids, educational materials, posters, infographics, etc.) and visual design/graphic user interface for online products (websites, mobile apps, social media, eLearning modules).
  • Develop prototype website design concepts and build wireframes.
  • Ensure adherence to U.S. government, client, and corporate protocols, including 508 compliance and data security.
  • As duties within HSD allow, assist Health Communications project activities as needed.


  • Degree or certificate in communications and/or graphic design, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Must be able to respond to requests and shifting priorities on-demand and be available during non-traditional working hours given occasional week-end social media/conference design needs as well as time zones differences for national events.
  • Experience or training in public health preferred.
  • Proficiency in all elements of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite, including designing for PowerPoint presentations.
  • Solid understanding of website development process, including user experience, information architecture, and usability testing.
  • In-depth understanding of pre-press preparation and printing processes.
  • Knowledge of basic web programming languages: HTML, CSS, Javascript; experience building websites in WordPress.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, writing, editing, proofreading, and oral presentation skills.
  • Excellent problem solving and program management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully multi-tasking across projects and delivering results within very tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of or interest in learning about domestic public health issues and working with diverse populations and/or underserved communities.
  • Strong communicator and problem-solver; ability to navigate various viewpoints to develop consensus.
  • Knowledge of U.S. government communications needs preferred, including 508 compliance, security, and reporting.
