Learn more about Instituto Promundo in Brazil, JohnSnowBrasil and World Education.
Promundo Institute was founded in Brasilia in 1997. At the time, Promundo's objective was to carry out initiatives under "The Global Orphan Project," administered by JSI Research & Training Institute.
Serious gaps were observed in social services as well as abuses of human rights that contributed to children becoming displaced from their families. The Global Orphan Project, created in 1992, aimed to identify and support innovative programs throughout the world that contributed to avoid displacement and diminish the negative impacts it had on infant/child development.
In 1997 Promundo carried out a research study commissioned by UNICEF that estimated the number of children affected by AIDS in Brazil. Since then, the Brazilian government has successfully implemented public policies for AIDS treatment which have positively altered the livelihood of children affected by AIDS.
As AIDS was no longer represented the principal threat to the life of Brazilian children, Promundo decided to focus on encouraging and strengthening the positive aspects and potentials of all children and adolescents living in urban low income communities.
In 1999, Promundo began implementing a project to strengthen community-based organizations (CBOs) that support children and adolescents, as well as investigating how gender equality could positively contribute to the health of children, adolescents, and their families.
Due to the fact that numerous works and/or research were carried out in Rio de Janeiro, Promundo opened an office in the city in 2000 which would later become its headquarters.
